Sweet Felt Hair Clips (tutorial)

I hope you all had a great Fourth of July! We celebrated as we always do every year – out on the banks of the Charles River for a spectacular fireworks display.  No city does fireworks like the birthplace of American independence. Boston goes all out when it comes to its  Fourth of July show!  It truly is a jaw-dropping event and the best holiday here in Boston.  It seems like the whole city comes out to celebrate by the river.  I love fireworks because no matter what age you are, they make you stop and watch in child-like awe.

Onto today’s project. I loved making these felt hair clips for a sweet 4 year old girl.  There is something so therapeutic about using just felt, embroidery thread, a needle and hot glue.  No need to break out the sewing machine for this project! I love the look of felt and thread, it looks handmade and sort of vintage.  The possibilities are endless, too!  You can make anything you want!

To start this project, cut out 2 pieces of matching pieces of felt for the front and the back side.  Always use high quality 100% wool felt, not the cheap 49 cent stuff you can by at Michaels.  The quality of felt makes a huge difference. The 100% wool felt is softer, denser and less scratchy than the cheap squares you get at craft stores. First, decorate the front piece of felt however you would like. For my blue bird hairclip, I ironed on a rhinestone eye and added a beak and a wing:

Using scissors, cut a small slit where you will insert the front prong of the hairclip on the back felt piece:

Sew the front and back layers together. I used embroidery floss but you can also use a sewing machine:

Find a hairclip to glue on. I bought mine at Sally’s Beauty Supply and they are pretty cheap (about $3 for a bag of 12 clips). There are a variety of hairclips that you can buy. The top one is a 2 prong alligator clip, the middle one is a 1 prong alligator clip and the bottom one is a snap clip. Any of these will work:

Add a dab of hot glue to the front prong of the hairclip and quickly insert it into the slit in the back of the hairclip before it dries:

Done!! Super cute, don’t you think?
